How to Leave Your Job with Dignity Throughout your professional life, there will come a time when you have to leave a job. It can be a mix of emotions you may be sad to leave a place youve been for years, or you could be excited for a new experience and opportunity however its always crucial that you leave that position with dignity. You can try and anger everyone youve worked with, and leave with a bad reputation, but that will only go on to damage your future prospects. Whenever leaving a job, try to make the transition as clean and as easy as possible by being a true professional, by following these 5 steps: 1) Give your notice early and professionally: When quitting from a position, handing your notice in can be one of the most nerve-wracking experiences. Your mind  will be filled with all the possible outcomes, and youll feel like youre letting people down. However, if you resign as early as possible, and in an extremely professional and courteous manner, there will be nothing to worry about. Be honest to your boss, and tell them why youre moving on, and give them the time needed to find a person to replace you in your role. Everything will work out perfectly. 2) Be positive: Everyone has ups and downs throughout anything in life, and the same can be said for your work. There are always set backs, and knock-downs, but take some time to sit down and look back at all the positive moments of your job did you get to go an amazing event? Did you learn a new skill? Have you made a bunch of new friends in your team mates? Dont dwell on the negatives, but celebrate the positives! 3) Work your notice period properly: Once youve let everyone know that youre off to pastures new, you may feel inclined to switch off mentally and just see your time out. However, that wont help yourself (as youll become bored), and it certainly wont help your company. Use your notice period to ensure you wrap up any communication with your clients (and to pass all responsibilities onto the new individual), and why not impart wisdom onto your team mates through some brain storm sessions? You may have knowledge which they have been wanting  to gain, and now is the perfect time! 4) Say thank you: Over the years, there will be a large number of people who have helped you get to where you are now and its important to be grateful. Ensure you send thank you messages to any clients youre worked with, and get a thank you card for your employer. Say your thanks clearly, and outline what youve gained from your position. 5) Celebrate in style: In your final days, organise a leaving drinks with your colleagues to celebrate the time youve spent in their company. Why not make an evening of it and talk about your memories? There is nothing wrong with celebrating something positive youve done, and showing that youve enjoyed your position is the best way. Once youre done, leave the office with a smile on your face and a spring in your step ready for your next adventure!

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Workplace Affairs Still Cause Problems I have written about workplace romance before, but it appears SOME people are not paying attention.Take the case of the American Red Cross recently dumping President and CEO Mark W. Everson after it was learned he'd had an affair with a female subordinate.This kind of hanky-panky has been going on in the workplace since, well, forever, but there is a lot less tolerance of on-the-job romance in some cases. Boeing CEO Harry Stonecipher learned that lesson the hard way when he had to resign because he had a love affair with another female executive. And now Everson can join that list of people who think the rules apply to someone else.Companies -- and even nonprofits like the Red Cross -- cannot afford to have their images tarnished by tawdry affairs that cast their public reputations into the mud. That means that those with lesser titles, including everyone from a senior vice president to the newest employee, need to be even more vigilant about making sure workplace dating complies wit h any guidelines set up by the organization. (And keep in mind that the rules may be even more strict regarding dating someone else if you are already married, and still apply even if you fool around while on a business trip.)While those workplace dating rules may be written in an employee manual, they may not be. But before you even think about becoming romantically involved with someone at work, make sure you clearly understand the rules and follow them. Ask your boss or your personnel department to clarify the guidelines on workplace dating. If they don't seem to have a clue, here are some general rules that will help keep you from getting into trouble:1. No dating the boss. This is always a bad idea because the boss can be fired for dating a subordinate, and your job and reputation can be trashed as well. But let's face it: the boss probably has many more connections than you do, and stands a better chance of landing on his or her feet. You could be looking for a decent job for a long time to come. If you are the boss, keep in mind that you could face a sexual harassment charge from the subordinate if the love affair takes a bad turn.2. Keep it private. No canoodling in the hallways, supply closet or elevators. Never send anything smacking of private thoughts via e-mail to the other person while at work. This can easily be used against you (this is how Stonecipher got caught), and lead to your firing on the basis that you're using company property for your personal use. If co-workers do find out about it, refuse to be drawn into any discussion.3. Set some ground rules. Always make it clear to the other person that you want the dating kept private, and that you don't want to jeopardize your job in any way. The Beginners Guide to Getting Booked at Speaking Events Speaking is an excellent way to spread your message to multiple people at once. If you are a business owner, its also a great way to sell your programs and services. Instead of speaking to each person individually, you can speak to multiple people at once and actually save time and make more money helping people and making a difference. When you start speaking, word starts spreading and people refer you to other people to speak.  You just have to get the ball rolling and the rest is easy. So where do you start? From my experience, I am convinced that cold calling is the BEST strategy to get what you want. I booked dozens of speaking engagements using this cold calling strategy.   When I was searching for speaking events to promote my book, my emails would get ignored over and over but phone calls got  immediate booking results. The truth really is that speaking event organizers are searching for you. They have a big job to get great speakers and often feel a lot of pressure. Often I could get booked at their next event because they didn’t have anyone yet. Here is the Beginners Guide to Getting Booked at Speaking Events: Step 1: Make a  List Make a list of all of the groups you can find that might be interested in having you speak.  Start with your local area and then you can always expand to other areas. If you are a fan of delegating research, you can use an assistant to do the research for you. But, I don’t recommend using an assistant to call and coordinate the speaking events. You need to be the one to talk with the organizers since they will want to speak with you personally about your topic. They will also want to ensure that you can speak clearly and the audience will like your topic and presentation. Look around online and find the contact information of the meeting organizers. Step 2: Start dialing Clear your distractions for a few hours and dedicate that focus time to calling your list. Have no distractions and just mentally prepare yourself to start calling around the people on your list from step 1. The first person you call will always be the scariest but it’s not that hard once you get the hang of it. After the event is over, always ask for referrals too. Ask who else they know you can contact to get booked, if they can introduce  you to them and if they can write you a recommendation on LinkedIn. Step 3: Have a Script Ready Heres an example for you: “Hi, my name is Anna Runyan. I am a speaker and I wanted to talk to you about bringing me in to speak at your next event because I think I could really help the women in your group!   The presentation is based on a book that will be published this fall called The Professional Woman’s Guide to Managing Men and it is basically a guidebook on how to work with and manage men.   What would you need from me for you to bring me into your next event?” [RELATED: Classy Career Girl Speaks in Brazil] Step 4:  Prepare Answers to Questions Know the answers to the following: -What is your presentation about? -What is your budget? (Remember to say that it depends on what your budget is).  Try not to say the number first! Then, always give a range. It’s just like a salary negotiation. Step 5:  Turn the No Into a Yes If they are already booked or they say no, be prepared to ask, Do you need a list of backup speakers in case someone cancels? How Your Brand Changes After Graduation - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Entering the world after graduating college can be scary. There are so many new things to worry about, the biggest of which is landing your first job. One way to make that burden a little easier on yourself is to amp up your personal brand. When you make the transition from college student to recent grad, your brand needs to reflect the change. Here are the aspects of your brand you need to consider during the transition: Define your goals Up until this point in your career, your goals have been short-term: gain new skills and land an internship. After graduation, the game changes. Now the goals you’re chasing are more long-term and involve landing a “real” job. Your brand needs to reflect this change. Think, where do you want to be in the next few years? Was the first thought in your mind a city, company, industry, type of job, or something else entirely? Whatever the case may be, decide where you want to go and make sure your brand expresses this desire. Use your brand outlets like your resume and social media to explicitly explain these goals. Highlight your best qualities The next step is to figure out your best skills and accomplishments that will help you achieve your new goals. Think about all of your experiences during college. Between classes, internships, volunteering, and student organizations, you have put together a lengthy list of strengths to add to your resume. Decide which of these qualities make you unique. What combination of your skills and accomplishments sets you apart? Once you determine your best qualities, you need to integrate them into your brand. Make sure your name becomes associated with them. For example, Jane is the one who writes blogs about animals, or Jack is the guy who led a group of volunteers on a huge project in the city. You want to become known for what you have done, so potential employers can imagine what you will do for them. Evaluate your outlets Now you need to implement your goals and strengths into every outlet you have. Your social media profiles, personal website, resumes, cover letters, and even your look are all part of your personal brand. Incorporate your post-grad ideals into all of these outlets. For example, you need to update your goals in every personal summary you’ve ever written. Your Twitter, LinkedIn, and blog bios, your cover letters, and the personal information on your website all need to reflect your post-college desires. Additionally, you need to make sure to emphasize those qualities we talked about throughout these outlets as well. Your prime accomplishments should be discussed in your cover letters, written about on your website, and broken down in your resume. If you want to be remembered by potential employers, you need to engrain these things into every aspect of your brand. Boost your network Finally, there is one piece of the post-grad brand update that you will hear for the rest of your career: networking. Now that your livelihood actually depends on your job search, you need to make sure to build a strong network to help you succeed. It’s time to step out of your comfort zone and actually reach out to professionals who can help you land a job. Think about the goals you selected. Target people to network with based on those goals. Reach out to people in your ideal city, company, or industry. A great way to start reaching out is to think about the connections you already have. Does anyone you know already know someone in that city or company? If so, ask them to introduce you. Another route is to tap into the alumni network of which you are now a member. College grads love to help other grads from their alma maters. Take advantage of this by reaching out to fellow alumni in your ideal companies. Once you’ve gone through the easier networking routes, you can also take it a step further by reaching out into uncharted waters. LinkedIn makes this really easy. Find someone who works where you want to work and ask to connect with them. Explain that you’re a recent grad and you’d like to learn more about their job at X company. You’d be surprised how many people are happy to connect with you just because you asked. Stepping into the world after college graduation doesn’t have to be the most frightening experience of your life.
