Four Under-Appreciated College Majors

Four Under-Appreciated College MajorsFour Under-Appreciated College MajorsFour Under-Appreciated College MajorsCourtesy studentapan.seFar too many college students choose a major based solely on societys opinion of those who work in that field. They also worry about how much money theyre going to make, how long they have to attend college to get their degree, and what kind of job opportunities will be available to them after they graduate. However, these students are missing the point of college. Getting a higher education is basically giving yourself a license to explore, learn, and see things in ways that youve never seen them before. If you hate business, why study it? Isnt the underlying reason behind going to college finding a way to make money by doing something that you love? These are the questions career coaching helps to solve.Besides (and I hate to break this to you), most graduates never actually work in the fields that they spent four years studying. So, why not enjoy it? Below are the four most under-appreciated college majors, and how you can utilize them in ways you never considered before.1. Education in JournalismSince this list was created in no particular order, Ill just tell you outright journalism is the most under-appreciated college major in existence.Students refuse to study journalism because they believe that they wont make a decent living by working in a dying field. But heres the hard reality.Journalism is only growing. Its just changing its shape. You might not work for a news station anymore. Instead, you might be a freelancer, working for many different publications and employing the unique ability to work anywhere you want.Or, maybe youll be a blogger, making money from the advertisements you sell on your homepage. You could also sell your work to magazines, market your own short stories and feature pieces, and (heres the best part) cover the news however you want on your own news page. This is where journalism is heading. Bigger, better, and more interesting things. An endless stream of opportunity awaits plus, its fun to study.2. Public RelationsWhat can you do with a degree in Public Relations?Probably a lot more than you originally thought. Politicians, school districts, teachers, celebrities, professors, and athletes are all popular employers of PR Directors. You know, those people who take care of their speeches and social media pages the people who help avert every major public disaster in existence. But PR majors can also zustrom social media pages for large companies. They can help businesses create an online brand. They can help writers and readers and CEOs keep their message intact. Branding isnt a new concept, but the internet is completely changing the definition. Now, PR majors can hold the power of the people in their hands, simply by pressing a few buttons.3. Political Science DegreeIm not going to argue that there are a ton of jobs for a graduate with a Political Science degree, but there are certainly plenty of interesting classes to take. Since a four-year degree in just about anything will land you a decent job, why not study something that actually makes you think about the world in which you live? If youve ever had an eye for politics and youre not sure what you want to do after college, this is the perfect major for you.4. EntrepreneurshipKnowing how to start your own business and make money by doing what you love is not only a talent, but a gift. You can graduate and have the knowledge to do literally anything you want, and you dont have to answer to an employer for it. Your life will be a gemisch of clients, employees, and management. And, even if you dont decide to start your own company altogether, youll have managerial and communication experience that will make you a serious candidate for high-paying jobs. Potential employers love the idea of hiring someone who knows how to start their own business, and who might have a few opinions when it comes to the bette rment of the company. This makes you a real asset (if not a bit of a threat). There are many more under-appreciated college majors. I cant possibly claim that these are the only four. Economics is another major that deserves more attention, as does management and business. Im sure youve encountered more than one major that, after taking a class or two, seemed far more interesting than you previously thought. Its one of the most frustrating things about college. You only get to do it once. And, if youre going to go into debt to do it, you might as well love what youre studying. That makes for an evenbest resume when you get out.Good luck

How to fend off that coworker who drains all your energy

How to fend off that coworker who drains all yur energyHow to fend off that coworker who drains all your energyEver feel like when a certain coworker drops by to talk, your energy disappears in 3 2 1 when they finally walk away? Heres how to handle this person at work.Say nope, nope, nopeThe answer doesnt always have to be yes.Christiane Northrup, M.D., an OB/GYN, author and radio show host, writes on her site about how empaths can deal with energy vampires in different areas of life. One of her tips is to use the word no.One of the best ways to protect yourself is to minimize your interactions with a vampire. You can do this by becoming empowered in the negative. In other words, learn how to turn people down. Saying no takes practice. And, its all about compassion, which as an empath, you have plenty of. If you find it too difficult to say no at first, start by saying, Ill get back to you. The main thing you need to master is stopping the knee-jerk yes. she writes.Dont be a push overBrandon Smith, an author, executive coach, speaker and podcast host, writes on LinkedIn about how you should be aggressive and take charge.Emotional vampires tend to pray on our professional courtesies and politeness. They take charge of conversations and quickly turn the topic of conversation to themselves and what they want to talk about. They do not like aggressive conversationalists, he writes. If you are the one asking the questions of them and if you keep redirecting them back to the agenda, youll soon see that they will begin to avoid you. You prevent them from getting what they want and they dont like that.Protect your timeRemember, your time is limited - especially at work.Dr. Judith Orloff, M.D., an author and psychiatrist, writes about dealing with different types of energy vampires in the office on her site. One of the types she describes is the sob sister, who she describes as someone who plays the victim, is always whining when you two talk and does a lot of compl aining instead of fixing whats wrong. This is how Orloff recommends dealing with someone like this Set clear boundaries. Limit the time you spend talking about her complaints. Say no with a smile. For instance, with a co-worker, smile and say, Ill hold positive thoughts for the best possible outcome. Thank you for understanding that Im on deadline and must get back to my project. she writes.Dont soak up all their bad vibesJon Gordon, a speaker and author, writes in his newsletter about how to interact with EVs, or energy vampires. If you are not a manager or leader and you have EVs on your team or in your office its also important that you decide to be more positive than the negativity your face. A simple rule is Your positive energy must be greater than all the negativity.

The 5-Minute Rule for During This Stage of Rsum Review, Employers Use the Rsum to Guide Inter

The 5-Minute Rule for During This Stage of Rsum Review, Employers Use the Rsum to Guide Inter The ability to appraise and enhance employee performance is a big benefit which will help drive your business success. You can be based anywhere on earth, must be fluent in English and is going to have the chance to travel. Ho reported this to reporters after the initiation of the providers new company logo here today. However, this doesnt mean theres no competition. Enthusiasm a part of reflection. So youve got your big ideas. The Hidden Treasure of During This Stage of Rsum Review, Employers Use the Rsum to Guide Inter Preemption defines the ability to recognize the task that wants a resource the most and allocates it the control to acquire the resource. In RTOS, such capability is accomplished by assigning individual task with the correct priority level. The Number One Question You Must Ask for During This Stage of Rsum Review, Employers Use the Rsum to Guide Inter I wished to remind all to check their present-day version of Sage HRMS and be certain you are on supported versions for the Q4 update. Sage Time provides a highly effective Project Budgeting module, which allows you to forecast and track budgets for certain projects. It provides a cost effective and efficient way to help you effectively monitor the overall integrity of your labor and time-keeping system. One of the greatest approaches to get ready for this is to plan ahead of time and create the employees which you already have. The objective of having all this data is to make it simple for the individual reading the appraisal to spot the staff in question clearly. Perhaps it isnt your task, or maybe its something you ought to be delegating. To put it simply, whats your single most important task today. Choosing During This Stage of Rsum Review, Employers Use the Rsum to Guide Inter Is Simple Because of this, the manager should state the date clearly. An excellent job description isnt merely a list of tasks it has to incorporate the critical elements of every position and the qualifications that have to perform that job. These reports can be quite helpful for managers and employees alike. Secondly, it enhances the consistency of reimbursement throughout the organization. Up in Arms About During This Stage of Rsum Review, Employers Use the Rsum to Guide Inter? Among the biggest criticisms of management by workers is they havent any idea what their employer expects of them, making them unsure of their role in achieving the overall aims of the organization. Inside this circumstance, the marketer must engage in a promotional campaign thats intended to educate the market on the item form instead of necessarily focus just on a particular brand. If you see that a vendors system is lacking within this area, then you may want to consider exploring alternatives. For instance, you may want to measure the effect of a training initiative on the teams performance a s a whole, together with individually. This seminar is presently unavailable. Or, you might be a specialist statistician, but you have sufficient insight into fieldwork to give direction to fieldwork coordinators. For instance, you might not be a specialist statistician, but youd be experienced enough with quantitative analytical approaches to provide direction to statisticians. Today will be a productive moment. Thus, the hours ought to be within a sensible selection, typically 15-30 hours weekly. Hence, were in a position to control the bunkering service better as we do not have to continue to keep stocks at hand, said Ho. If you arent learning daily, you have become obsolete. The brakes are surprising since they are sharp and strong. With these too you can depend on the factory settings or set your own custom made alternatives. This is particularly true of systems that offer you analytical capabilities. The Advantages of During This Stage of Rsum Review, Employers U se the Rsum to Guide Inter The managers recommendation must be consistent with the information contained in different parts of the review. Marketing gone wrong epic fails

Marketing gone wrong epic fails Marketing gone wrong epic failsPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun Pity the poor marketing hack, trying to tap into the zeitgeist and produce a marketing campaign that will bestattungs the public imagination and see a product take off. When it works it can be great but when it doesnt, you can become an object of ridicule and parody, made only worse by the instantaneous spread of bad press via Twitter, other social networking sites and viral video. Here are some examples of marketing campaigns that failed to hit their mark either because of poor taste, poor judgment, sheer incompetence or, worst of all, being plain boring. The iSnack 2.0 debacle The name of this new product by the makers of Vegemite chosen by contest caused a furore and spawned a multitude of viral video parodies (such as one involving scenes of an outraged Hitler from the movie Downfall). A question mark remains over whether or not the whole exercise was simply a stunt intended to generate publicity and controversy, but the general consensus is that it was just an example of marketers getting it horribly, horribly wrong. According to well-known advertising guru Siimon Reynolds, the schwierigkeit with the iSnack name was that it wasnt in keeping with the heritage of Vegemite. When you create a product that is too big a shift for the consumer in their head, they tend to reject it. Thats what Vegemite did it has a traditional perception and it chose a high-tech name. The result? Epic fail. Where the bloody hell are you? Tourism Australias Where the bloody hell are you? 2006 campaign may have been good for Lara Bingles personal brand, but it did little to promote Australias profile overseas and attract those sought-after tourists, and was considered by many to be a PR disaster. The ad was temporarily banned in Britain because of its use of the word bloody, and then in Canada for its implication of unbranded alcohol consumption by the opening line, Weve bought you a beer. In Singapore, they ran the ad as So where are you? which doesnt have quite the same ring to it. The ad generated plenty of controversy, but tourist figures actually went down after the campaign. So what the bloody hell went wrong? Obviously, many consider the use of the words bloody hell to have been ill-advised, considering the more conservative attitude towards language in many countries compared to Australia. However, Reynolds thinks the supposed failure of the campaign is disputable, and emphasises the many other factors that play into peoples travel decisions things such as the cost of the trip and the time it takes to get to the country. The jury may be out on the effect of the ads on Brand Australia, but if measured by tourist numbers, the campaign was a dismal failure. Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates Microsoft ads Microsofts series of television ads from last year, featuring comedian Jerry Seinfeld and Microsoft founder Bill Gates doing things like shopping for shoes and connecting with real people, were universally panned as pointless, unengaging, ineffectual in improving Microsofts image and, worst of all, not funny. It was a $300 million series of ads about nothing. The ads were quickly pulled from screens, only to be followed by a string of other celebrity ads featuring the likes of Eva Longoria and Deepak Chopra, but it still seems that Microsoft has yet to hit its target. Microsofts Im gonna puke ad Windows recent online Im gonna puke ad to promote its Internet Explorer 8 browser depicts a woman who vomits uncontrollably when she discovers what one imagines to be kein zuckerschlecken pornography on her husbands computer. The husband slips on the mess and she continues to spew all over him. The ad had to be pulled amidst great controversy, with some speculating about whether or not child pornography was implied, or if Microsoft was trying to covertly suggest that if only hed had IE8s InPrivate Browsing, his nasty habits wouldnt h ave been discovered. Needless to say, the ad was considered the height of bad taste, not to mention retch-inducing, and dubbed the worst tech commercial ever by one technology commentator. It seems that after Apples Im a Mac, Im a PC ad campaign effectively skewered Microsofts image, Microsofts increasingly desperate and bizarre attempts to be edgy and cool and push the envelope have mostly backfired. Reynolds says, I presume its an example of Microsoft trying to be more hip, but I think youve got to take smaller steps to change perception rather than just go outrageous. In terms of marketing attempts, Microsoft has yet to really find its feet but that doesnt stop it from continuing to be the most widespread operating system in the world. Pepsi scores not Pepsis AMP up before you score iPhone application, which categorises women into 24 types and then uses the smartphones internet capabilities to link users to information about them and what they like intended to help men score and brag about their conquests caused outrage in people who considered it not only crass, but sexist, insulting and exploitative towards women. The backlash was intense and ran like wildfire throughout the industry and consumer blogs. This attempt to be young, hip and cool simply got it wrong. After the flood of public ire, PepsiCo issued this Twitter apology Our app tried 2 show the humorous lengths guys go 2 pick up women. We apologise if its in bad taste appreciate your feedback, and linked to a hashtag called pepsifail. Virgin Blue email mistake doh Heres an example of how one tiny slip of the finger can result in a huge PR disaster. Last year, over one million Velocity members were mistakenly sent an email by Virgin Blue staff offering them free lounge memberships and upgrades to gold status, only to have the offer retracted two hours later when the stuff-up was discovered. The follow-up email read Oops Due to an error youve received our

How to Tip the Salary Scale When Negotiating Your Legal Job Offer

How to Tip the Salary Scale When Negotiating Your Legal Job OfferHow to Tip the Salary Scale When Negotiating Your Legal Job OfferI remember my first real experience with negotiations. I was 18 years old and had my eyes on a used 1981 Toyota Celica. My dad went with me, taking the lead on negotiating the purchase price. It all seemed very simple to me we told the owner the amount we were willing to pay, discussed it a bit, and very soon I was proudly driving home my new wheels.Negotiating is a part of everyday life at home, at work, in relationships. But we often dont think twice about the strategies involved. If youre a legal professional seeking employment especially if you have substantial experience and in-demand skills you should give more than a passing thought to salary negotiations. Too often I hear about mistakes people make at this important phase of their legal job search.7 Essential Salary Negotiation TipsHere are some tips to keep in mind before you start negotiating your salary and legal job offerPrioritize whats most important Whether its salary level, healthcare benefits, retirement program, developmental work opportunities, or work/life balance perks, such as flexible working hours, direct your negotiations to the factors that are most imperative to you.Research industry-wide salaries As you explore legal job openings, apply only to positions that complement your skills and experience and salary expectations. Research legal compensation ranges for the position youre seeking through resources such as the U.S. Department of Labors The Occupational Outlook Handbook. And check Robert Half Legals annual Salary Guidethat features salary ranges for more than 100 legal service positions throughout North America.Communicate compensation expectations While you shouldnt discuss a specific salary level with your potential employer at the start of the interview process, mention your basic compensation expectations early on. For example, you can ask, Can y ou explain how compensation is structured for the position?Negotiate salary through your recruiterIf youre working with a recruiter, use that person, a neutral advocate, to negotiate your compensation.Be realistic If your new employer cant meet your salary threshold, ask about possible performance-based incentives that can be earned after the first six or 12 months on the job. You may also want to negotiate non-financial perks that are important to you.Remain positive and open-minded As you engage in salary negotiations, be confident youre worth the compensation youre requesting. However, draw the line between conveying confidence and arrogance.Get it in writing Once youve successfully completed your negotiations, get all the terms agreed upon in writing, including hours required per week, salary, benefits and any other details agreed upon.Throughout the negotiating process, remember that your demeanor sets the tone for your employment with the organization. Being honest, open-mind ed and professional during the salary discussion will maximize your chances of coming to a successful agreement with your new employer.

How to Prepare for Unemployment While Employed

How to Prepare for Unemployment While EmployedHow to Prepare for Unemployment While EmployedIf youre reading this, congratulations. Youre probably totenstill employed. That means that you have time to put your financial, social, and work affairs in order in case your employment status changes. You can prepare for unemployment while still employed. In fact, there is no better time to prepare for unemployment than while youre still employed. While you cant redo the decisions youve made over the past two to10 years, you can make decisions now that will limit your exposure if your current employment ends. And, end it might. In the current economic climate, with the threat and reality of increased governmental regulation the threats of increased employer costs via prescribed health care and government interference in the employer-employee relationship in areas such as mandatory benefits and general uncertainty about sales and profitability, employers are still shedding jobs. Most importan tly, if you are unemployed, or kompetenzprofilly unemployed, it is important for you to know that, in self-defense, employers are creating fewer jobs and some jobs have disappeared forever. It will impact the length of time you are unemployed and highlights the importance of the need to be prepared for unemployment. How Do You Know to Get Ready for Unemployment How will you know if the unemployment ax will fall? There are signs and symptoms for which you need to watch. Employees in some positions, such as finance or sales, usually have a better picture of their companys health. Some companies aim for communication and results transparency, and all employees know when they need to prepare for unemployment. Whichever the case in your organization, this is how to know when and if unemployment looms for you. Are you in danger of getting fired or laid off? 12Tips To Prepare for Unemployment Given this economic climate, your unemployment, whether expected or hitting you out of the clear blue, may last awhile. With this possibility in mind, what can you do now to preserve and protect your family and your lifestyle should you find yourself suddenly unemployed? Unemployment Tip Save Money Recognizing that this is easy to say, your best strategy to meet unemployment is to have money in the bank. By some figures I have seen, the average person who loses their job has less than a couple of weeks of savings in the bank. According to the Washington Independent, a Brandeis University study finds that four in 10 families dont have enough savings or assets on hand to pay for essential expenses during a period of unemployment. The report also notes that the poor economy is hitting minority households particularly hard, erasing their economic gains of the past two decades and widening a racial wealth gap. Additionally, the lack of savings is affecting a familys mobility, their ability to go where the jobs are. Unemployment Tip Delay Major Purchases If you have an y inkling that you may lose your job, or even if you dont, now is the time to delay major purchases which are unnecessary. An unemployed friends refrigerator bit the dust recently, and she had to replace it, but she economized by eliminating nice tos such as the ice maker. When stores start offering options such as payment plans and layaway (remember layaway?), run, dont walk in the opposite direction. Recently, on television, for example, furniture stores are offering to delay interest payments for four years. Resist these siren calls of buy now. Despite the fact that your purchases will aid the economy, you need to prepare for unemployment. Unemployment Tip Live on One Salary For a family in which two or more members are employed, consider trying to live on one salary to build savings, eliminate debt, and prepare for the potential consequences of unemployment. Unemployment Tip Use leistungspunkt Cards for Emergencies Only Unless the item is essential, and youd be surprised how few items are actually essential, control the urge to purchase using a credit card. The purchase price always comes due, and the interest adds up to more than you ever imagine. Credit is the main factor in families living too close to the edge in the event of unexpected unemployment. In the unemployment stories featured on Alison Doyles job searching site, the readerswho sharedtheir unemployment stories cite credit card debt as one of the deepest holes they had to climb out of when they became unemployed. Unemployment Tip Stay Prepared to Job Search Your resume and references should always remain up-to-date. You never know when youll need them and you dont want to spend the first potentially productive days of your unemployment updating application materials and contacting references. Likewise, maintain your network of contacts while you are employed. Stay active in professional associations so youll be the first to know of job openings and receive leads via word-of-mouth. Prior to unemployment is also the time to build your professional presence on social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. It can take time to build an effective brand online and to do the networking necessary to expand contacts. Prepare for potential unemployment with current job search materials and online and offline networks of contacts. Dawn Rosenberg-McKay offers additional ideas about staying marketable while you are employed before the dreaded unemployment event occurs. Unemployment Tip Create Mobility Options While many are tied down with homes, family, social commitments, a partners job, and more, in the event of unemployment, flexibility and mobility may make the difference between staying unemployed and finding a new position. Prepare for unemployment by maintaining as much flexibility and mobility as possible, if only by charting out what if scenarios as opposed to we cant scenarios when discussing your future with your family. Unemployment T ip Consider Further Education Just a few credits short of a degree? Maybe that professional certificate or designation would make you more employable than your competition. Working on your Masters degree sounds proactive and says something about your willingness to stretch, grow, continue learning, and develop further knowledge and skills. In the event of unemployment, education may give you an edge. Unemployment Tip Broaden Your Skills As you prepare for unemployment, consider the possibility that a job may not be available in the field or occupation of your choice. To prepare for such a contingency, a colleague suggests that you can broaden your skills and references by using a bit of spare time to volunteer, or better yet, work part-time in a different field. herbei husband worked, in his spare time, as a garage gas boy to help out a friend and to gain access to a hoist to work on his collector car. This work means he now has sales skills he can use to move into part-time wo rk after years of being a government employee, an area where there are no jobs in his high qualifications field. My colleague says, It can be hard to develop cross skills when you work in cubicle land most of your life. But, her husband did, and it is serving them wee in unemployment. Unemployment Tip Consider Starting Your Own Business Another colleague and her husband have spent years combing garage and yard sales for finds. When her husband was laid off recently, it was a short leap to selling items on eBay and in a local antiques and collectibles shop. Should he find employment, he chose a shop that does not require his presence but is fee-based. Another acquaintance, who had a long-term interest in a particular dog breed and was active in the local and national associations, capitalized on her interest, knowledge, and contacts. She opened an online business that catered to the needs of other lovers of her breed with canine cookies, breed-specific key chains, and other novel ty items, and resources for breed care and rescue. Advertising-supported, the site took advantage of her long-term hobby. Take a look at your own hobbies, interests, talents, and skills. Perhaps a part-time business, that you can start while you are employed is your best insurance and preparation for unemployment. Small business owners possess some control over income and employment, and even a hobby, can help support you well into retirement. Unemployment TipGet Along With Your Boss Yes, the babo makes the final decision often, about who comes and goes. Use the advice in these articles to ensure your relationships with your boss and coworkers are positive and rewarding. It is not the time to job hop because you hate your current boss, no matter howbad your current boss is. How to Get Along With Your BossPlay Well With Others Develop Effective Work Relationships Unemployment Tip Hang on to Your Current Job Lets face the truth. Best liked, and valued employees are not the first to go to the unemployment line or website. You can learn from this colleague who shared her job security story. I was once in the situation where a huge number of co-workers got laid off, and I was one of the few left. It was horrible. But, in hindsight, I think they kept me because I could do every job in my department. I dont think any of my co-workers could have made the same claim. That was a gradual learning process, and it wasnt something Id done on purpose with the goal of surviving a layoff. It was just me being me. When my co-workers went on vacation, I would offer to learn their jobs and keep things under control for them, so they didnt have to worry about anything while they were gone. So if the goal is to survive a layoff, Id advise people to make themselves as indispensable as possible but to do so without making anyone feel threatened. Figure out ways to make life easier for your colleagues, your boss, and everyone else you come into contact with during the workday.
